Stylis, a brand belonging to the Nowy Styl Group, has entered the first edition of the Hotel Room Design Challenge competition. Contestants are tasked with designing a hotel room that will tell its guests about Dubai. The results of the work will be presented on 17-19 September at the Hotel Show Dubai 2019. This year will mark the twentieth edition of the Hotel Show Dubai, the biggest and most important event in the hospitality industry in the Middle East. The organisers have decided to celebrate the 20th birthday by holding a competition for a room design inspired by Dubai. Its central theme is: Dubai: A World of Possibility, A Lifetime of Stories.
“Every year, at the Hotel Show, we look to improve and refresh our feature content, to ensure that the event remains fresh, relevant and inspirational for all our stakeholders. In particular, this year, as we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hotel Show, we wanted to include a feature which allows designers the opportunity to express themselves, and challenge themselves to represent the past, present and future of Dubai through design. I speak for the whole team when I say that we can’t wait to see how some of the region’s leading design and fit out companies fulfil the creative brief,” announces Nathan Waugh, Portfolio Director – Hospitality Division, dmg events.
The challenge of designing the Dubai room was taken up by three companies operating in the Middle Eastern market: Godwin Austen Johnson, Gensler and Stylis. Nemanja Derman, chief architect for Stylis, says that his team long wondered what underlying theme for the room’s décor to choose, as the wealth of inspirations characteristic of the metropolis is enormous.
“Ultimately, we decided that we should not impose a single vision of Dubai upon guests, leaving them free to explore the city and then shape their memories. Hence references to history, landscape and sites are subtle, and everyone can interpret them in a slightly different way, uniquely, just as each of us has a different perspective of the world and a different fingerprint pattern - which we made a symbol of our room,” he explains.
The room designed by the team in Dubai, called The Fingerprint Room, was manufactured in the modern Office Furniture Factory in Jasło, Poland. Hotel Show visitors will see it on 17 September. Their vote will decide which design wins the competition. According to Michał Wilczyński, Director of Stylis, the very participation in the competition is extremely important for the company. “The challenge of designing, and then delivering a single room was very exciting on the one hand, and extremely difficult on the other. This is best shown by the fact that only three companies operating on the market took it up. I am very glad we are in this group, because it shows the big potential we have. Regardless of the outcome of the vote, I’m sure this will bear fruit in the future because the eyes of the entire hospitality industry will be turned towards us and our design at the Hotel Show,” he says.
The results of the competition will be known on 19 September. Following the Hotel Show, Stylis plans to install the Fingerprint Room in its showroom in Dubai.
